How do I change my computer's network settings?

In order to connect to lighting control hardware on a jobsite, it is necessary that your laptop be both connected to the lighting network (via wired Ethernet or wireless Wi-Fi) and that the network adapter being used to connect has an IP configuration that allows it to see and connect to the lighting control devices on the network.

Network adapter settings can be changed by performing the following steps:

  • Navigate to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections
    • Create a desktop shortcut or press the Windows key and type "View Network Connections" to quickly navigate to this page without digging through various Windows settings menus
  • In the Network Connections menu, double-click the network adapter to be modified

  • In the Properties menu, find and double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to modify the adapter's IP configuration

  • Network adapters by default are set to DHCP mode ("Obtain an IP address automatically") and this is appropriate for jobsites with DHCP servers on the lighting network (such as is the case when lighting devices are connected to the Control Subnet port of a CP4N or ZUM-HUB4)

  • Jobs without a DHCP server (such as standalone installations with a DIN-AP4 processor) require you to configure static IP settings ("Use the following IP address") for the network adapter

  • You must press "OK" to save changes and exit out of all properties menus before the adapter settings will be updated

Note that if you are using a static IP address, the IP address assigned to your device must not conflict with any other hardware on the network, and the IP address and subnet mask must be such that all of the lighting control hardware are on the same subnet. See this Wikipedia article for more information on IPv4 subnetting.
